MoneyOwl Performance to date – June 2021

I have been investing regularly into my MoneyOwl portfolio monthly for some time now. While the amount is nothing to be shout about. It is just regularly fixing something so that I can save and invest at the same time.

Who is Money Owl?

MoneyOwl is an initative from NTUC Social Enterprise. They are sort of a Robo-advisor coupled with a suite of wealth planning tools such as will writing and insurance solutions. What really attracted me is their rather simple way of investing and using Dimension Funds as part of their portfolio construction. I believed back then I was comparing them versus StashAway. It was only when I found out about Endowus that I went full on robo-advisors.

As a retail investor, you will most likely not be able to access such funds. When the market tanked sometime in Feb 2020, I picked a few Robo-advisor to invest into and look into performance a few months later. Almost 18 months has passed now and I will most likely show some of the performance in my later posts but I must say, by doing nothing much, all advisors reported positive returns as compared to my own stock picking.

June 2021 performance (Since Day One Deposit)

In portfolio terms, it is up +17.77% on 30June 2021 since inception in June 2020. The portfolio size isn’t something great. Just a net deposit of 2,300. I kept the regular investing of $100 per month and it’s looking rather slow. I shall decide if I would want to up that amount soon given that I have quite a bit of commitment in the coming months. June was a stable month at least.

If we look at Time Weighted Returns, it is the more accurate to account of deposit and withdrawals. Again, this returns is just for reference. At the end of the day, what you originally invest in and the final amount will be the absolute profit.

In terms of the portfolio allocation, it is at 60% equities and 40% fixed income and makes up of 4 different funds. Everything will be on Dimensional Funds. I kind of wished that I had a small cap fund in there. But I guess, as long as my main robo has that exposure that would be good as well on an overall basis.

Personally, I like the allocation % because it is just widely diversified for equities and widely disperse in terms of investment grade.

In the details on the profit and loss sheet:

a. The Global Core Equity Fund will be the largest allocation and makes up most of the returns to date and continues to do well.

b. The Emerging Market Large Cap Fund will be the lowest allocation and makes the least of the returns to date. I don’t mind some EM exposure at this point in time.

c. The Global Core Fixed Income Fund will be my main steady income Fund and finally.

d. The Global Short Term Fixed Income Fund will be the last stabiliser in my portfolio.

MoneyOwl fees

A few months ago, MoneyOwl announced that they have lowered their investment advisory fees as well as absorbing the platform fees due to the pandemic.

a. For asset under management S$10,000 and below, there will not be any fees charged through 31 December 2021. This amount will be rebated back in the portfolio. So take note that only Cash investments are eligible for this rebate. The cash management accounts do not have these in place and your total portfolio value has to be above S$50.

b. There is an introduction fee of S$99 which is worth about S$535 for a comprehensive Financial Planning. Money Owl’s advisors will sit down with you to review your portfolio. The review is expected to contain detailed report and recommendations (It is estimated to be around 2 hours). I do think there are some discounts if you use some linked services of sorts such as Ohm Energy (You get a S$20 off)

c. Additionally, they are introducing free financial resilience workshops to focus on cash flow management and debt management. Likely through Webinars and anyone can join in.

It is nice to see that as a partner to our national social enterprise, they are making moves to help Singaporeans. The reduced fees on investments which is one of the key points in long term investments. The more fees you pay, the more it affects your long term goals.

S$280 from SCB Bonus$aver Account

For cash solutions, there are plenty of those around on robo-advisors. Cash solutions actually mean as good as cash. They can also be termed as money market solutions. In terms of allocation, they can be considered riskier than holding cash and less risky compared to bonds. Generally, the risk is lower as compared to any investments.

Cash Solutions/Management

Most of the solutions are termed as cash management. It may sound complicated, it is just another term or a financial description.

i. It can be a series of money market funds combined to get a yield.

Cards N Such – More Cards – You Trip Debit Card

The thing about Cards (Being Credit card, debit card or prepaid card), there seem to be a trend of introduction usable physical card. Just to name a few, Razer Card, Big Pay Card, Wise Card, GrabPay Card, Singlife card and an upcoming card Hugo Card. There is just too many of these around isn’t it. I’ll say it isn’t a bad thing, It is indeed a little troublesome but as long as you manage it properly, it will assist you in your little own personal finance journey.

You Trip Card

Today, I shall discuss more about the YouTrip card. It used to be a wonder travel card before the pandemic hit. Basically, you get superb FX rates when you use the YouTrip card to make a purchase in a foreign currency. Pretty decent I say. Yes, it is another card and you need to preload the amount in SGD (If you dont have any other currency). The max limit I believe will be the same, which is S$5000 at any point in time and an annual limit at S$30,000.

Within their app, you can store any of the following 10 currencies:

  • Australian Dollar (AUD)
  • Euro (EUR)
  • Great British Pound (GBP)
  • Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)
  • Japanese Yen (JPY)
  • New Zealand Dollar (NZD)
  • Singapore Dollar (SGD)
  • Swedish Krona (SEK)
  • Swiss Franc (CHF)
  • United States Dollar (USD)

Pros:

  • It has a great Forex Exchange rate if you need to purchase an item in another currency
  • They don’t charge you any other fee except for the amount they need to pay Mastercard as a service provide.
  • It works just like any other card that you use. Even has a pay wave function.
  • You can most likely use a credit card or debit card to top up the You Trip Card. Pre-Paid cards are most likely not accepted.

Cons:

  • You can’t add it to your mobile wallet.
  • It is a Debit Card (Meaning you need to preload the amount in there and it is capped at S$5000) at any point in time.
  • You also cannot take that money out once you have put it in so think wisely.
  • Other than good Forex rates, there are no perks, rewards or cashback so it really depends on what you are looking out for.

Futu Brokerage – MooMoo Singapore Promotions

Here comes another brokerage in Singapore – Futu Holdings and under the Singapore name “MooMoo”? Sounds kind of fishy but legit.

From their website:

Their investors include Tencent Holdings, Matrix Partners and Sequoia Capital. Sounds decent to me.

Futu Holdings Limited (“Futu”) (NASDAQ: FUTU)is an advanced technology company transforming the investing experience by offering a fully digitized brokerage and wealth management platform .

Futu was listed on Nasdaq on March 8, 2019.

Under MooMoo, they are under the Singapore branch, https://www.moomoo.com/ and from time to time they will run a promotion to fund the brokerage account to get 1 Apple share. Although after setting up the brokerage, maybe buying Futu stocks in the US stock exchange might be a good idea given their backing.

After Tiger brokers, here come another commission free brokerage mobile platform with similar functions and good promotions. It seems like the apple share promotion has ended. If you wish to sign up for those commission free perks and/or future promotions, do use my referral code here: https://j.moomoo.com/004Fsa

Razer Pay – Digital Wallet and Card Beta

Yet another Payment wallet once more. This is known as Razor Pay. This is also The Singaporean son, Tan Min Liang who famously wrote to our PM to suggest a proposal to unify payment solutions. It sounds more gimmick than ideal strategy when it was first published. Who doesn’t know him right? Then again, the speed at which solution was launched was so much slower than GovTech.

To get the Razer Pay app, apply through here: https://pay.razer.com/ and you may use my referral code 9iog2G. Both of us will receive a $1 credit to our wallets. In addition, that allow us to stand a chance to win a Razer Gaming Chair (worth $749.90).

After completing the Razer application and profile, you will probably get a Razer mask for free at the Razer Store. Not too sure if there is a delivery fee.

Razer Card (Beta)

For using the card beta, you will get:

a) 1% cashback on all purchases.

b) 10% cashback on purchases from Razer Store.

There is no minimum spend and no cashback cap during Card Beta. After Beta, we shall see how it goes.

Some perks here that includes getting the credit card rewards:

  • Using specific miles card, you can also get miles (If that still matters given the current situation

  • For now, you can still use the Razer card to top up YouTrip card so far. Shall use that to try to top up the BigPay card as well.

Rewards

From now till 31 Dec 2020, Razer is running attractive reward tasks and some of them are so easy to achieve that it is almost free money/gift. The value you see in getting these gifts depends on how you view these items are actually worth the time and money for. The four categories are Getting Started, Pay, Spend and Influence.

The final ultimate gifting is completing everything is that you will be rewarded with a Razer Iskur Gaming Chair (worth $749.90)

Conclusion

The Pros:

  • Works with some prepaid cards so you get the credit card rewards as well.
  • Withdrawal cannot be done. No ATM withdrawals at the moment.
  • For payments that doesn’t give a cashback, I guess this card comes in handy.
  • Rewards is based on the Razer Store and limited to the gamers. I’ll say it is both pro and cons.
  • The spend and fund limits seems like what many other wallets are providing (e.g. Grab Pay) so that sits on the fence as well.

The Cons:

  • Feels just like another Pay Service and wallet.
  • Rewards seems pretty and limited so I probably will use sparingly.

Big Pay (Digital Payment)

Another payment service has come into the picture. More apps, more interface and more complexity is added into the whole scheme of things now. It feels abit like delivery and food services in the yesteryears. I don’t know about you but I do feel like many of these are popping up as if they are the next super app. I choose to believe that they want the users in order to sell more marketing money to another sucker. But well, as long as there are benefits to consumers and data is kept confidential. Why not?

What or who owns BigPay?

As defined from the website, AirAsia founder and CEO Tony Fernandes officially unveiled BigPay, the budget airline new digital payments platform, at the Money 2020 conference in Singapore

BigPay offers a mobile wallet which can store up to 10 credit and debit cards, and has partnered with MasterCard to offer its own top-up cash card that can be used for payments and withdrawals worldwide. Users can view transactions in real-time on the app to keep track of their daily spending.

What set them apart? As they have claimed

BigPay allows you to spend in 150 supported currencies without transaction fees at Visa’s exchange rate, and also allows you to withdraw money from overseas Via, Maestro, or Cirrus ATMs. It also allows you to make international bank transfers. I’m not too sure if this is the best way to do this as there are so many other options that can also do this.

Rewards

The app has a interface that would reflect spending categories and that separation would be suitable for someone who appreciate such stuff to track their monthly expenses.

Of course, all wallets would have their rewards to keep you using their app for a pro-longed period until you are dependant on it. t

The reward: 1 BIG points for every $5 spent on payments only. I think that for now, they have not figured out the main touch points that people want for rewards other than implementing their own services. This will come unless the app decided that they do not wish to invest more money on this. So this is a very good way to measure how serious a company is when they start expanding their business.

The Deal – $5 for referrer and referee

The key benefits now: We’ll both get $5 credited to our BigPay wallet when you complete the sign-up process by activating the physical card that’d arrive in your mail. After that, you can refer your friends and so on and so forth. It doesn’t seem like there is any cap at the moment since they are new.

Easy transfer back to account

BigPay allows you to withdraw your balance in cash to your bank account. The thing to note is that it’s limited to $100 a day, $300 a month, and you have to pay $1 fee each time you withdraw as a transaction fee. Okay, that isn’t too great a news. Most people don’t even want to pay $0.01 for anything.

That being said, as my philosophy, don’t sweat the small stuff. Smaller or new companies need to pay their overheads and salaries so this mindset would take a least a decade for people to understand.

Sidetrack a little to those who think that saving every cent is considered thrifty. Don’t blame companies for raising prices or dropping interests.

  1. No one owes you anything
  2. It is a free world. Anyone is free to choose – Do not use what you determine as best to define good.
  3. Treat customer service with respect.
  4. Companies have overheads and salaries to pay. Directly or indirectly it saves someone a job and income so increased costs have to be translated back to consumers.
  5. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Able to stack with other cards

BigPay can double stack with prepaid cards, which is also something that is virtually impossible. For now, you can still use your Grab Card to top up your BigPay wallet. Nice.

It also seems like the Razer Card (which is still in beta) works with BigPay for now.

Delivery

It takes about 4-7 business days for the card to transit and reach you via a registered courier. From there, you will then receive your card.

Conclusion

The Pros:

  • Works with some prepaid cards
  • Withdrawal can be done but at a cost.
  • Hard to find more

The Cons:

  • Low and limited withdrawal amount of $100 per day; $300 per month.
  • Rewards seems pretty and limited so I probably will not use it.

Christmas Dash

I’m not a big fan of Singtel but as usual, don’t go against anyone or anything that gives you a decent deal. Dash is basically a digital payment App. They have developed the interface to include deals and a rewards scheme if you use their app to buy, remit or top up SIM card or international air time. Basically, like a grabpay app but suited to fit in their own services.

If you use Singtel Dash to shop, dine and spend this festive period, Dash users will earn a bonus chance to shake the Dash snow globe within the app and win a sure-win prize so long they meet any of the criteria from now till 31 Dec 2020:

  • Make a min $20 hi! SIM card top-up / Make an international air time top-up of $10
  • Make a purchase of minimum $10
  • Remitting $400

CardUp and getting more buck for your money?

Do you randomly try to look up for deals on cashback and miles? I can say that I’m a true blue Singaporean. I will try my best to always look for a good deal without going out of the way and affect my time when searching for such good deals. I’ve used this service CardUp when it first launched and the first transaction was kind of like free since it was on a promotional rate with Citibank cards.

Two years on, I still find it hard to catch on this bandwagon where you actually have to pay a fee to get rewards. But who am I to say anything about if this is a good business model. They must be around here to service a group of customers who want to buy miles or get cashback for some of their payments.

I’m not exactly the kind of guy who spends more to save more but I must say it is a good marketing strategy.

What is CardUp?

From their website: “CardUp is a credit card enablement platform, which enables the payment or collection of big expenses using credit card, in places where cards are not accepted today. Examples of payments include rent, tax, invoices, payroll and more, which are still paid by cash, cheque or bank transfer.

With CardUp, individuals and businesses can now shift these big payments to their existing credit cards. This provides an unparalleled opportunity to earn credit card rewards, access interest-free credit and digitise payments – making big payments rewarding.”

Rewards or Spend more Get More

Even until today, I still find it very difficult to see if this is a reward scheme. Maybe this is a way to get more out of spending more. I stay by my own views about credit card rewards because if you have to spend more to get more. I don’t get it. I’ll say that unless there are monetary benefits to cover the initial or some of the fees that is required, I don’t find it sensible. That said, there are the miles and cashback camp who like to make sure there are benefits for every transaction.

Don’t get me wrong, these are great strategies to get the best bang for your buck. Again, different things is just for different folks. This doesn’t really work for me. Truth be told, I am 50-50 on miles and cashback but don’t agree with paying more for it. Perhaps more selectively, a good deal is something worth paying for but not all situation.
