Earning Rewards and Miles on your Credit Cards

Travel season is back and I have been reading up quite a bit about the miles and cashback camp. The last two years, void of travelling were purely a cashback play from many folks except some whom believed that it would all go away. It really depends on how one views rewards because some of those payments are excluded from earning any form of miles or cashback.

With the introduction of a fee-based payment, these rewards come at a price. CardUp used to be a game changer in that sense because rents could be paid and rewards could be earned at the same time. Similar to many companies, they throw out marketing dollars so that people get to know their brand and use their proprietary systems. With the data they have, they can then find out more about people’s behaviour, and make marketing trends that keep the stickiness in clients to continue to use their platform.

Credit Card Rewards & Earning Rewards

I’m no exception. I used to be the kind where I would not spend more to earn more rewards. As time went by, I realised that buying miles or arbitrage on cashback difference does make sense for me. My insurance, MCST payments, tax, property tax and other exclusions can now be added to my miles game or cashback. This is pretty awesome if you ask me. Paying and earning the rewards seems to make sense to me today.

I still wasn’t sure what kind of changed me and I constantly paid a small fee to gain that reward which all amounts to nothing previously.

Who and what is card?

CardUp is on a mission to provide individuals and businesses with a better way to pay and get paid. CardUp operates regionally across Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia as a major payment institution

If I recall rightly, some time last year they were acquired by funding societies

With CardUp, you can now make and collect payments digitally, including with a credit card, even in places where cards are traditionally not accepted. Some of the items that you can make payments to will be:

  • Insurance
  • MCST Fees
  • Rent and Rental Deposit
  • Education
  • Car Loans
  • Miscellaneous Payments
  • Domestic Workers salary
  • Taxes and Stamp Duty
  • Season Parking
  • Electricity Bills

I personally forgot about them until they sent me a reminder about the property tax season. It was a pretty decent deal at a 1.75% fee that has no cap. It is not a sponsored post but if you have not had a CardUp account do check it out. If you need any help to understand more, just drop me an email.

Krisflyer and KrisPlus Making headways

The opening up of Singapore seemed to be a cheer so far with the most recent news seemingly as a positive sign as all business would eventually open up to the rest of the world. Nonetheless, everyone have to still stay vigilant and not fall into the trap of Covid lockdown once more. It has been an experience with Covid and no one would wish that something like that will happen once again.

KrisShopper – Loyalty Programme

With these Krisflyer seemed to have extensively opened up and aggressively fronting their marketing dollars in Krisflyer shopping (KrisPlus or Kris+). Krisflyer launched their own loyalty programme called KrisShopper. The first 30,000 members who link their KrisFlyer accounts to KrisShopper will receive 1,000 miles, and the first 5,000 will receive additional SGD$20 to spend on KrisShop.

What do you need to do:

Link KrisFlyer to KrisShopper 500 miles
Subscribe to news & promotions while linking accounts 500 miles
Link before 30th June 2022 Status match

If you are eligible and done the correct steps, both miles and voucher will be credited within 10 business days after 30th June 2020.

Kris+ Couponmania (Co-brand/Partnership with Sqkii)

If you do not know what is Sqkii by now, you can check them out on their facebook or webpage. They first started out by letting people do the typical hide and seek treasure hunt for prize money by giving clues on a daily basis. How Kris+ is partnering with them is that they have created a game that allows anyone with a Kris+ account to merge coupon boxes. It is definitely not going to be easy as this is similar to the 2048 game that you play on your mobile. Each merging gets you a bigger coupon or prize which seems to be random. There’s also no guarantee that you will get the top prize which a a Nintendo switch or a Oven set.

You can only access this game with a mobile browser. Click on this link to go on to the browser: https://krisplus.couponmania.sqkii.com/auth?ref=GWWVAQT13P

Or you can key in the referral code: GWWVAQT13P

You would also get a mini coupon prize to start off once you have signed  up. Additionally, if you sync your Kris+ account, you get a speed up ticket that gives you a faster distribution per token. Once that is used up, you need to start referring more friends.

Remember not to skip the referral portion and also syncing your Kris+ account.

Everyone probably need referral to open up to more spaces to collect the coupons to merge the coupons. It takes 7 mins to be loaded with the level 1 coupon so 10 spaces means it will be full in 70 mins. Mindblown? haha.

CardUp and getting more buck for your money?

Do you randomly try to look up for deals on cashback and miles? I can say that I’m a true blue Singaporean. I will try my best to always look for a good deal without going out of the way and affect my time when searching for such good deals. I’ve used this service CardUp when it first launched and the first transaction was kind of like free since it was on a promotional rate with Citibank cards.

Two years on, I still find it hard to catch on this bandwagon where you actually have to pay a fee to get rewards. But who am I to say anything about if this is a good business model. They must be around here to service a group of customers who want to buy miles or get cashback for some of their payments.

I’m not exactly the kind of guy who spends more to save more but I must say it is a good marketing strategy.

What is CardUp?

From their website: “CardUp is a credit card enablement platform, which enables the payment or collection of big expenses using credit card, in places where cards are not accepted today. Examples of payments include rent, tax, invoices, payroll and more, which are still paid by cash, cheque or bank transfer.

With CardUp, individuals and businesses can now shift these big payments to their existing credit cards. This provides an unparalleled opportunity to earn credit card rewards, access interest-free credit and digitise payments – making big payments rewarding.”

Rewards or Spend more Get More

Even until today, I still find it very difficult to see if this is a reward scheme. Maybe this is a way to get more out of spending more. I stay by my own views about credit card rewards because if you have to spend more to get more. I don’t get it. I’ll say that unless there are monetary benefits to cover the initial or some of the fees that is required, I don’t find it sensible. That said, there are the miles and cashback camp who like to make sure there are benefits for every transaction.

Don’t get me wrong, these are great strategies to get the best bang for your buck. Again, different things is just for different folks. This doesn’t really work for me. Truth be told, I am 50-50 on miles and cashback but don’t agree with paying more for it. Perhaps more selectively, a good deal is something worth paying for but not all situation.

If you really want to get on this, just drop me a note for a referral code.
